Karthik Subbaraj took a bold step to portray men and women as raw and as real they are in Iraivi. Along with the female leads, Mammootty and Ajith practiced feminism by supporting them throughout all the phases and ups and downs in their lives. Sowmya and Meenakshi’s independent nature and self-realization was beautifully enacted by Aishwarya and Tabu. Sowmya accepts Major Bala’s (a physically challenged played by Mammootty) love in the end as he has always been there for her in her hard times unlike Srikanth. Sowmya, who is always insecure about her unluckiness, does not want sympathy from her lover-director (Manohar). Meenakshi stands up for herself when Srikanth (Abbas) tries to get her back after he initially had left her for money. The two encounter love and heartbreak at different points in their lives. Meenakshi (Aishwarya Rai) is a singer and Sowmya (Tabu) is an office-goer playing the roles of Srividya’s daughters. Srividya is a single mother who gets the responsibility to carry the family on her shoulders when their ancestral property is taken away from them. The multi-starrer directed by Rajiv Menon had powerful female characters played by Aishwarya Rai, Tabu and Srividya. The movie ends with Kamal Haasan’s surprising entry as the Head of the office, who liked the approaches of the three women than Pandian’s. After taking over the office responsibilities, Sathya, Paappamma and Janaki will make several changes in the office management from a woman’s point of view (Like adding a child care room for mothers). Apart from their terrific acting, Revathy, Rohini and Oorvasi excelled in comedy as well in Magalir Mattum. The three used their wits to imprison Pandian inside a house and play as the bosses at their office whilst his absence. When Pandian troubles the three women for sexual favors, a sudden mysterious hero did not jump from the skies to save them. The film’s basic theme was about ‘workplace harassment’. Rohini gets a special mention for her role of a gutsy helper/servant. While Sathya was an unmarried single woman, Oorvasi played the role of a married conservative woman who is not afraid to drag a dead body in a scene. Revathy as Sathya, Oorvasi as Janaki and Rohini as Paappamma donned the roles of typical middle class women from different backgrounds. Starring Revathy, Rohini and Oorvasi in lead roles, the movie revolves around the lives of three women who would eventually get trapped by their Manager Pandian (played by Nassar). Magalir Mattum is considered as an all-time favourite for many.
